In 1966 BT introduced the new revolutionary phone - the Trimphone. It was an entirely new and novel design.
The handset featured a combined receiver and earpiece which meant that if you put your hand over the mouthpiece your caller could still hear what you said. A recipe to destroy many a long friendship.
However the best feature was the luminous dial, which glowed green in the dark. This effect came from a small amount of radioactive gas which made the dial glow.
BT later- 15 years later- invested in a widely publicised initiative to safely dispose of the evidence. A shining example of public spirit. (Sorry)
