Vodafone has announced price cuts to European data roaming

charges. This good news story starts on Wednesday December 8, 2010. They will charge £2 per day for up to 25mb of data for on a one off basis or £10 per month for regular travellers. Customers who have signed up to contracts in excess of £40 a month will be able to access 25MB of daily access, for no extra charge. Vodafone said the flat fee for up to 25MB of data represents a 60pc saving on the existing price.
The new tariffs mean Vodafone now clobbers the opposition on price. O2 and Orange charge £3 per mb, and T-Mobile charges £1.50. There are other deals around, for instance, Orange charges £12 per month for 10mb of data and T-Mobile £10 for 50 mb used over the course of a month.
This is the start of the future for data roaming. The standard advice that everyone had was to turn off data roaming before you left the UK. The second that your plane landed and the email started up – you were going to be hit with a large bill. With the new price regime from Vodafone, at least, you may now feel that the email is now worth having. However, watching TV programmes abroad on 3G is probably still best avoided.
Vodafone seemed to have been preoccupied with other matters for a few years but this announcement together with other initiatives such as the One Net service for business does seem to demonstrate a resurgent business. Thanks Vodafone.
