With most quoted telecoms
companies up on the year in 2010, 2011 is shaping up nicely. And, thanks to the public becoming more and more data hungry, telecoms companies look set for a cracking 12 months to come.
The winners include:
• BT, which is up 22% on the year so far
• TalkTalk, which despite continual Ofcom investigations, is up 25.6%
• Vodafone is up 18%
• KCOM (which used to be Kingston) is up 23%
• Daisy is up 0.5%
• Virgin Media, which for historical reasons is quoted in the US, is up a massive 67% And the losers:
• Cable and Wireless, which split into two telecoms companies, with the British company confusingly called Worldwide and the overseas’ company called Communications, at 92 and 54 respectively in March. They are now at 64 and 47 – so the exception here
• Colt is down 1% And let’s not forget international telecoms companies:
• France Telecom (owner of Orange) is down 9% on the year
• Telefonica (owner of O2) is down 12%
• Deutsche Telekom (owner of T-Mobile) is down 3% To provide some perspective, the FTSE is up 8.6% on the year.
