Does Verizon Have the Most Expensive Click In The World?
A Verizon Wireless click costs an estimated £454.70 according to the Google Adwords tool.

(Pictured is Google's Keyword tool showing the estimated cost per click (cpc))
When you click on an Adwords advert (the adverts that appear at the top of most pages when you do a Google search) then the company who owns the adwords ad pays Google a fee. This is known as the cost per click. These costs can vary from a few pence up to the most expensive that we have found to date. The dearest by a mile is that for Verizon Wireless which has an estimated cost per click of £454.70. Then next cost down is pretty amazing aswell - the key Verizon has a cost of £224.94.
How does this work? Google lets advertisers bid for words which are searched on – it calls these words keywords. So, in this case the cost to get your advert appearing with the keyword Verizon Wireless is about £450.
What does this mean? It means that if I want to place an advert on Google so that when someone types “Verizon Wireless” then for it be shown, it will probably have to bid about £450. It also means that if Verizon wants their adwords advert to be shown they will also have to bid something like this. It then follows, if someone clicks on this advert which uses the Verizon Wireless then Google gets richer by about £450.00.
Who are Verizon? They are an American company in telecommunications worldwide, employing some 22,000 people and turning over a cool £100bn a year.
At this point I wanted to show you an advert with this as a keyword so you could spend a grand or so in a couple of clicks if you were so minded - I couldn’t find any.
So is this all a cunning plot by Verizon to avoid paying Vodafone (who partly own them) the dividend that they so desperately want? Is Google lying with it’s estimated cost per click? Perhaps you good people out there can explain it. I look forward to your responses.
