BT vs Virgin Media vs Cable and Wireless vs Talk Talk - 16/03/11

In early 2010 the UK landline market was shaken up like never before, with only BT not making any major changes.  So what happened?

BT

Having seen off the threat of strikes BT seem to have got their act together with positive moves in all directions.

Virgin Media

NTL:Telewest as a brand was unceremoniously dumped by Virgin as they rebranded their business offering to Virgin Media Business on February the 11th 2010.

Cable and Wireless Worldwide

On March 26 2010 Cable and Wireless split in two and Cable and Wireless Worldwide and Cable and Wireless Communications were born.  In a thoroughly confusing launch Cable and Wireless Worldwide are the UK company and Communications are the international company.

Talk Talk

On March 29 Talk Talk was admitted to the UK stock market following the demerger with Car Phone Warehouse.  Their business offering was still branded as Opal until February 1 this year when surprise surprise it became Talk Talk Business.

So a year on how have they done?

BT share price has risen 123.30 to 183.80 a 53% rise - wow.

Talk Talk’s share price has risen from 123.75 to 139.80 a rise of nearly 15%.

Virgin Media’s share price has risen from 1135 by a huge 49% to 1685.

And unfortunately the exception is

Cable and Wireless Worldwide which has performed pretty disastrously with a price falling from 143.60 to 70.85 after taking a 94m loss for the year to March 2010.  Their chief financial officer Tim Weller has resigned.  The company says it is making progress and will release full results on May 24.  Even bid speculation doesn’t seem to have done much for the share price.

How About The Future?

Customer service is a real problem for all of the providers but apart from that the demand for more and more data and bandwidth seems unstoppable.  Cable and Wireless stands as the exception with it’s devotion to large business requirements where it’s margins have been hurt – it will be interesting to see it’s results.
