What is the difference between extensions and lines?
A Lines is the connections to the telephone network supplied to you by your telephone company. The Birchills Telecom Connect system needs an internet connection to function and this usually uses a line. In the UK BT has a monopoly in providing the line but it can be bought through Birchills Telecom so you only pay one bill.
Extensions used to be thought of as the telephones attached to the switchboard. However with Birchills Telecom Connect they become a more powerful concept. They are the building blocks of your system. So now not only can you consider a phone terminal and it's associated services as an extension, you can consider an auto attendant or IVR as an extension, or a queue as an extension.

What happens if all the phone lines are in use?
Old fashioned phone systems have a basic limitation that you can only make or receive as many simultaneous phone calls as you have phone lines. If all your lines are in use, incoming callers will receive a busy signal, and further extensions will be unable to make external calls. With Birchills Telecom connect the concept of phone lines no longer applies -you can always receive incoming calls and make outgoing calls. Customers need never get a busy signal. If you overload the capabilities of the system then all that happens is that voice quality may suffer.
How do remote extensions work?
Birchills Telecom Connect remote extensions allow you to stay connected anywhere. Remote extensions are phones that Birchills Telecom Connect treats as local extensions. Calls made to your office can be forwarded by Birchills Telecom Connect to any other land line or mobile. However using the Birchills Telecom system if your remote phone is part of the system then it enjoys all of the system capabilities and calls are transferred to and from it for free.
Does Birchills Telecom Connect handle faxes?
Yes. Faxes can be directed to a virtual fax box where you can have them emailed to you directly or held awaiting your download. You can also connect an old fashioned fax machine via an adaptor with it's own dedicated telephone number. This number is within the Birchills Telecom system so you no longer need a dedicated external phone line and can have any geographical number.
Can Birchills Telecom Connect handle incoming calls differently after hours?
Yes. You can greet callers with one message during business hours, a different one after hours and another on holidays. After-hours calls can also be routed to available staff, a mobile, a different number, or directly to voicemail.
Modes can be switched via your control panel or automatically switched at times of day, days of the week or holidays that you configure.
Can I keep my phone company voicemail?
No - the Birchills Telecom Connect system is far more powerful and less expensive.
What is call cascade?
Call cascade is a powerful, flexible feature of Birchills Telecom Connect that routes calls through a series of options if the targeted extension isn't available. Call Cascade settings can be configured to ring other local extensions, remote extensions or ring groups, or it can send calls to another announcement or to voicemail. Different call cascades can be triggered depending on whether the target extension is busy, not answered, on "do not disturb" or screens the call.
What do line hunt groups do?
Old fashioned systems had to hunt for a selection of an available outside telephone lines with line hunt groups. Birchills Telecom's hosted VoIP system removes this restriction you can make as many calls as your system allows..
