For years scamsters have been able to use 070 numbers to rip us all off. They still can, so you need to be aware and simply not dial numbers beginning with 070. We explain more below.
In August 2013 Ofcom warned
"Consumers are warned about a scam which is designed to make them think they have received a missed call from a mobile phone. When victims call the number back, they are actually dialling a service costing up to £1.50 a minute. The scam begins when you receive a missed call from a number beginning 070 or 076. These numbers are used because they look like '07' mobile phone numbers but can cost considerably more to call."
The menace hasn’t gone away we still get very plausible emails, inviting us to call the scammers back. For instance:
The scammer baits the hook by asking you to phone to hear something important or valuable to you. So in the example above - "phone me back to win new business." Other examples are - you've won a prize or a relative wants to get in touch. They can also just ring once and hang up hoping you'll phone back.
The scammer wants you to hold on as long as possible or phone back. So possible tactics are:
Long rambling messages
Messages that are half heard - so you phone back for a better line
Voice menus that go on and on
Sometimes, they even will not disconnect and try and keep the line open.
The advice is simple, stay alert and don’t call 070 numbers. Oh, and Ofcom since you control the numbers, why don’t you do something?
If you are with Birchills Telecom then by default we block the calls for your safety and economy!
If they actually worked for a lving these scam morons would save us all a lot of hassle and trouble
